About the tour
Travel from effortlessly spectacular Rio de Janeiro to the jungle and the thundering Iguazu Falls, to cosmopolitan Buenos Aires. Take in the history, the architecture and the natural beauty while participating in ophthalmology professional visits in both Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
During the tour, led by Prof Harminder Dua, there will be professional visits to University Hospitals, private hospitals and medical clinics to investigate Ophthalmology in both Brazil and Argentina. Throughout the tour there will be change to experience and delve into the rich and varied cultures of both countries, learn about their history, experience the cuisine and take in the diverse landscapes.
There will be a pre-tour extension in Rio de Janeiro that will include the Carnival Champion's Parade and a post-tour extension that will explore Patagonia.

Your tour leader
Professor Harminder Dua
Harminder Singh Dua MBBS, DO, DO(London), MS, MNAMS, FRCS(Ed), FRCOphth., FRCP(Ed), FEBO, FRCOptom., MD, PhD is an Indian-British medical doctor and researcher. He is the chair and professor of ophthalmology at University of Nottingham and is the head of the Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Previously he was associate professor at the Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA when he was invited to chair in Nottingham in April 1994.
Professor Dua specialises in corneal transplantation and ocular surface diseases. He has served the profession in various capacities, which include: President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (2011-14); Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology (2007-14); President of EuCornea, and of EVER. He is currently member of the International steering committee of the second Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS II), Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, and the American Ophthalmological Society. He is also Editor-in-chief of the Journal of EuCornea and Chairman of the Advisory committee of the International Council of Ophthalmology. He has more than 120 awards and accolades which include 35 eponymous and award lectures; The Times Higher Education Award 2014 for ‘Research project of the year’; the Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award (2013) and the Vice-chancellor’s medal (2016) amongst others. He was listed by the magazine ‘Ophthalmologist’ in the top 20 most influential individuals in Ophthalmology worldwide (2014); and amongst in the top 100 in 2016. He was one of five Ophthalmologists in the list of ‘Britain’s Top Doctors’ (2010) published by The Times magazine.
He has over 325 scientific publications, has supervised 43 post-graduate (PhD and MD) students and has been endowed with honorary life memberships of four international academic societies. One eponymous lecture, “The Dua Lecture” Birmingham, and a seminar room in the Nottingham post-graduate centre, “The Dua Room” have been named after him. He, has previously led a highly successful ophthalmology tour to south India.

Itinerary at a glance
- 2 Mar (Mon) Rio de Janeiro: arrive late evening and check into the hotel in Copacabana
- 3 Mar (Tues) Rio de Janeiro: Take a scenic train ride to Corcovado Mountain to visit the statue of Christ the Redeemer and enjoy the views over the city. In the afternoon take a cable car to Sugar Loaf Mountain, stopping at Morro da Urca and walk to the next station with a lovely panorama of Copacabana. Welcome dinner in the evening
- 4 Mar (Wed) Rio de Janeiro: Visit the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and their Cornea Clinic. Partners will have a tour of historic Rio, taking in the Metropolitan Cathedral, Candelaria Church, Bank of Brazil Cultural Centre and the regenerated port area. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening there will be a lecture session with local ophthalmologists
- 5 Mar (Thurs) Rio de Janeiro/ Iguazu Falls: Fly to Iguazu Falls (the Brazilian side) and visit the Brazilian side of the Falls, including the impressive Devil's Throat. Check into the hotel on the Argentinian side of the Falls. Dinner that evening at the hotel
- 6 Mar (Fri) Iguazu Falls: Visit the Argentinian side of the Falls, taking in both the lower and upper trails. Walk along the catwalks that hang over the falls for breath taking views After a picnic lunch visit the surrounding rain forest, including Guiraoga wildlife refuge
- 7 Mar (Sat) Iguazu Falls: Morning talks by Professor Dua. Afternoon at leisure
- 8 Mar (Sun) Iguazu Falls/ Buenos Aires: Transfer to the airport and fly to Buenos Aires. Visit the antiques market at San Telmo and the artists' district of La Boca. Coffee at Cafe Tortoni. Walk to dinner in the evening
- 9 Mar (Mon) Buenos Aires: Visit the British Hospital and its ophthalmology department. In the afternoon enjoy a cruise on the Tigre Delta. Before dinner that evening there will be a wine tasting of Argentine wines
- 10 Mar ( Tues) Buenos Aires: Visit to the University of Salvador and their ophthalmology department. Partners will visit Palermo Soho area to explore the famous shopping district and the Fine Art Museum. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening there will be a dinner and tango show
- 11 Mar (Wed) Buenos Aires: Starting in elegant Recoleta District, stroll along the Avenida Alvear, the most palatial street in Buenos Aires. Visit Recoleta Cemetery (and the grave of Evita Peron). Head north to the Palermo neighbourhood with its wonderful parks and gardens. Afternoon at leisure. Farewell dinner
- 12 Mar (Thurs) Buenos Aires: Depart for the flight home or continue with the Patagonia extension
Patagonia Extension 12 - 16 March 2020
- 12 Mar (Thurs) Buenos Aires/ El Calafate: transfer to the airport and fly to El Calafate and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon at leisure
- 13 Mar (Fri) El Calafate: Drive out to the Perito Moreno Glacier and walk up to the glacier on catwalks. Following a picnic lunch take a cruise up to the glacier. Return to the hotel mid afternoon
- 14 Mar (Sat) El Calafate: Drive along the southern edge of Lago Argentino, board a catamaran and cruise past the gigantic blue icebergs to the Upsala Glacier. Lunch on board. Return to the hotel late afternoon
- 15 Mar (Sun) El Calafate/ Buenos Aires: Fly to Buenos Aires and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure
- 16 Mar (Mon) Buenos Aires: Depart for the airport
